Yes. I am giving the Earl of Spencer the highest rating possible on (sic)shooters. Anyone who has ever been to the Earl may think I am being a little too generous here but at the end of the day, I drove four hours from Busselton to Albany on my honeymoon for no other reason than to go to the Earl for a pie and pint. That is how much I love this place.
The Earl has a style similar to that of an old English pub. It has low ceilings, an open fireplace, a large selection of ales on tap and an awesome garden courtyard. While floor space inside the Earl is at a minimum, this does help contribute to the cosy atmosphere and provides a good setting for a pint of Guinness on a cold, rainy afternoon.
The selection of brews on tap at the Earl is one of the best I have ever seen. It is mainly limited to English and Irish ales but for those who aren’t fans of this style of beer, there is also a selection of Australian beers to choose from. The choice of drinks is not just limited to beer, though. There are also wines produced in the local region, a large selection of spirits and the standard pre-mixed drinks on offer.
On top of the remarkable choice of drinks is the Earl’s great menu. They provide everything from light bar snacks to reasonably priced meals. If you’re a fan of beef and Guinness pie then you’re in luck. The Earl does the best pie and pint I have ever tasted, one worth driving four hours for.
If you are ever in Albany and looking for somewhere to grab a drink and a meal, the Earl of Spencer is definitely worth checking out.

Pub / Club Name: My Place Bar & Restaurant Location: Perth, Western Australia (Australia) By Ryanator
On a recent trip to Perth with the missus, we were wandering around on a Sunday night looking for somewhere to grab a meal and a few drinks. Not knowing the area we were staying in too well, we decided not to stray too far from our hotel, Seasons of Perth. We toured the surrounding streets several times but didn’t really find anywhere that we liked so we just stood in the street for a while with our hands in our pockets and “What do we do?” looks on our faces. While standing there, we saw a young couple across the road go up a very short flight of stairs and enter an illuminated room. On the wall outside that illuminated room was a menu. Inside that illuminated room was a bar. Jackpot!
After asking ourselves “How the fuck did we not see this place before?” we entered My Place Bar & Restaurant, headed straight to the bar, grabbed a drink and a menu and then pulled up a seat at a free table.
My Place Bar & Restaurant has a modern layout. They aren’t trying to fool anyone by scattering around cheap pub memorabilia and certainly aren’t trying to pass off as some faux British or Irish pub, which seems to be a major craze in Australia at the moment. It is a plain and simple yet modern city bar and restaurant.
Being a Sunday night, it obviously wasn’t packed out with a queue forming at the door, but there were still a fair few people in there. The service here was incredibly quick and the staff were very friendly. Each time I ordered a drink I was also given a free generously-sized sample of another drink available at the bar, which was pretty cool. One sample I was given was a wheat beer from Last Drop Brewery, which was without doubt the best wheat beer I have ever had (I even ordered two more pints of it later in the evening just to confirm it). There is a fairly sizeable selection of cocktails behind the bar, both the pre-mixed variety and hand-mixed variety. Off the top of my head, the pre-mixed variety is $7.00 per cocktail and the hand-mixed variety is $15.00 per cocktail. After ordering a few cocktails, the missus was offered a hand-mixed cocktail for the price of a pre-mixed cocktail. Score! Then it turned out that they made her the wrong one so it was on the house. Bigger score!
When it comes to food, My Place Bar & Restaurant do a pretty good job of it. I’m no food critic so I won’t go into detail but I will say that our meal that night was very nice and reasonably priced. The waiting times for the food were also very short. There is nothing worse than sitting around for an hour waiting for your food while your stomach is having a whinge.
Overall, my experience with My Place Bar & Restaurant was a good one. Any place you leave well-drunk after a big meal without an empty wallet is a good place if you ask me.

Pub / Club Name: Moon & Sixpence Location: Perth, Western Australia (Australia) By Ryanator
I was in Perth on Monday wandering around with some time to kill so I decided to hit up a pub for a pint of Guinness and a steak sandwich. Being a lazy shite I didn’t really feel like walking far so I scanned the perimeter and noticed several people across the street sitting in a beer garden, sinking booze and eating food. Bingo!
As I crossed the street and entered the beer garden a strange feeling washed over me. “Have I been here before?” I asked myself. Aaahhh yes! The Moon & Sixpence is the mystical pub featured in The Big One-Eight In The Big Smoke! Extra points scored for having a history with this place.
The Moon & Sixpence is essentially a traditional English pub that also features a more modern-styled beer garden out front of the premises. The interior is similar to that of a pub you would see in a midday British television soap shown on the ABC. Sorry about the massive generalisation there but it helps to paint a picture. There are plenty of local and imported beers both on tap and in the bottle, a large selection of reasonably priced pub grub on the menu and an open fireplace thrown in for good measure.
Being a Monday afternoon, there was hardly a massive crowd filling the Moon & Sixpence. However, my memories of this place a few years ago tell me that the Moon & Sixpence draws a fairly sizeable crowd on weekends. The host of live bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights probably helps with this attraction of people.
All in all, the Moon & Sixpence is a decent pub with a good selection of beers and a reasonable menu. Definitely worth checking out next time you’re in the heart of Perth with some time to kill.
